The Story Of A River ...

Found this note while going through old diaries. Written in year 2000 and specially dedicated to my son, Muaz, then 3 years old.

THE STORY OF A RIVER

Near your grandfather's house, there is a small river called Alor Tok Hat
which is also the name of your Grandpa's village

Your Grandpa's great grandfather used that river ... long long time ago
to travel from his village to another villages ... using sampan or bamboo raft
And his wife and children used the river for bathing and washing

Your Grandpa's grandfather, used to catch plenty of fish and `udang galah'
in that river ... using `jala'
His wife, make `mengkuang' mats from the abundance `mengkuang' shrubs
found along the river

Your Grandpa's father used bamboo fishing-rod to catch
`ikan keli', `haruan', `sepat', and `udang galah' in that river
His wife loves to cook `siput sedut' and small river prawns found in it

Your Grandpa and Grandma sometimes go to the river
to watch your mum, your uncles and aunties bathed ... when we're kids
Comes drought season ... there'll be a `menuba' fiesta
where kampung's people will gather
to catch fishes with their bare hands .. and held a feast later
a bonfire, a mass BBQ for all ... what a joy!!

Your Father used to jump into that river ... head first!!
from the bridge across the river ..
or from the tree branches or coconut trunks hanging over it
And, your Mother (that's me), used to dive under water ...
to scoop pure white clay (selut) from the river bed,
shaped them into small round cakes, and
left to dry under the sun ... my heyday self-made shoes whitener !!

You?? What can mummy says ...
That poor river is now almost `dead'!!
The dirty and murky water is only ankle deep.
Only small fishes and tadpoles swim in it
You'll never know how useful and fun a river can be!!
For lately ...
People began dumping rubbish in it!
All kind of rubbish ... it smells and attracts flies and pests
Its sad, really sad ...
The `kampung' that goes by the name Alor Tok Hat
is now no more ...
replaced by the name Kg. Bukit Belah !!

MUAZ, HAPPY 14TH BIRTHDAY
PLEASE LOVES MOTHER EARTH AND MAKE HER PROUD OF YOU!!
ME TOO ...

The river that I used to spend a lot of time during my younger days is not as bad as yours although it is, as you mentioned, very murky. I pity the young generation today including my children as they never had the opportunity to experience the moments that I think the best time during childhood...

Yah, sudah nak cari sungai yg tak tercemar. Kat pendalaman mungkin masih ada ...
