Travelling with durians ...

Imagine travelling 375km with 24 durians onboards ...
Scary eh!!
That's what we did exactly last Thursday ...
Unbelievable!!
Whilst fetching son no 5 from Jengka, we decided to bring some durians from our family orchards to my husband's niece, my brother both in Kuantan, and our daughther in Maran.
While dreading the famous durian smells that can last for days and make you dizzy ... wanting our close ones to taste once a year harvest of homegrown 'only the best varieties' durians superseeds our rational thinking ... haha!!
So ... after meticulous research and advices from few veteran durian sellers ... we zestfully applied all the tips on how to reduce the smells aka 'petua hilangkan bau durian dalam kereta'!!

1. We bought the biggest available polysterine box.
Before filling the box with durians (make sure to do that after the box has been put in the car boot 1st ...), we put some;
- charcoals (wrapped them in several batches with newspapers for easy handling and distribution)
- pandan leaves (a lots so as to cover the whole base)
After filling the box with durians, put some more charcoals and pandan leaves in between and on top.
Then we cover the top of durians with;
- papaya leaves (covering them fully)
- then close the lid and seal it with adhasive tapes.
3. Place more charcoals and pandan leaves inside the car boot for extra smell control ... my overzealous effort i.e. ...
4. Finally, we also place some cut durian stems at cars' air-conditioning valves ... as per advices!!

The whole journey was pleasant. The car airconds was on the whole time. There was no owerpowering smells of durians inside the car ... really. But for other people sake,
we parked our car as far as possible from other vehicles at every stops we made, just in case. You just can't trust durians ... haha!!

p.s. My husband and mum were very pleased indeed ... but I personally think we did smelled a tad bit of durians after arriving at our last destination. Maran!!! (maybe my nose is over sensitive ... or maybe its psychological ... 'cos I'm too obsessed with the durian smelling ... whatever!!)
Well!! ... what the hecks. Its DURIANS!!
Either you hate it or love it.

Happy trying the tips above durian lovers!!
